Chapter Twenty-Seven

It was nearing midnight. Peter Wilson had been in the interview room for more than an hour as Whitton and Saint continued to ask the same questions over and over.

“Did you know a William Wilson?” Sophie asked. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down visibly and she caught herself smiling, this time because she knew she had him. “Gregory?”

He fought the urge to cry, but his eyes were wet with tears. One by one they trickled down his cheek. His eyes closed, and he dropped his head to his chest and sobbed.

“I can’t, I’m sorry…I’m so sorry.” His voice cracked and his shoulders visibly shook. “I didn’t mean to…”

“Gregory?” She called his name gently, repeating it until he finally looked up at her. “Gregory, we’re going to take a short break now. Do you understand?” He nodded, and this time she let it go. “For the record, Mr Wilson, aka Gregory Armstrong, has nodded his assent.”

Closing the door behind them, she instructed the uniformed officer from before to take him in something to eat and drink.

“What the hell are we stopping for?” Dale said as they walked towards the exit door.

“Because, he was drinking earlier, and he is going to talk. Whatever he is hiding, whatever crime he is involved in, he wants to talk about it,” she replied, pulling a cigarette from the pack. She offered one to Dale, but he shook his head no.

“So, let him!” Dale insisted.

“We will, I just wanna give him five minutes. Let him stew,” she said, lighting up and inhaling. She checked her phone and wondered if Rachel was waiting up. Flicking open the message app, she sent a quick message, not expecting a reply. “I don’t want a fancy lawyer saying we coerced a drunken man into admitting anything.”

Rachel: There is a spare key in the key safe. The code is 3024.

She smiled to herself and wondered why it was she had never felt the need to keep Yvonne up to date with how long she would be working till. Maybe she just wasn’t wearing rose-tinted glasses anymore over her relationship with Yvonne.

With her cigarette finished, she slapped Dale on the back. “Right, let’s get this over with.”

Standing outside of the door, Sophie held off from opening it. Instead she took a moment, got her head into the right space. Previously she had played nice cop, lulling him into a sense of easiness with her. She’d been understanding, smiling and polite with him so far, and he felt comfortable with her. But now she was going to change that up. Now she was going to rip him apart until she got the truth from him.

Turning the doorknob, she pushed the door open hard and let it bang against the wall. She noticed him jump out of his skin and place a hand across his chest.

“Sorry, did I scare you?” she asked without even looking at him. She pulled the chair out, letting it scrape against the floor, the kind of noise that made your teeth hurt.
